Failures during the Early Life period are often related to manufacturing errors and can be prevented by Strong Design Quality Reliability Testing which yields failures that can be used to make Design Upgrades prior to Volume Production. Failures occurring during the longer term life of the component / product are called random failures as they randomly occur independent of operating time and are often measured by predicting MTTF level from Accelerated Life Testing. Unlike these constant rate failures, wearout failures are caused by mechanisms that degrade in performance gradually until the device does not function any more.
Today’s Challenge
Reliability Engineers face a constant challenge to perform Accelerated Stress / Life Testing in minimal time and minimum expense , yet are still expected to make a Confident Failure Rate Prediction from a low volume, short duration Stress Test. To achieve such an objective requires planning of an effective and often complex type of Reliability Stress testing that covers the Early Life and Longer Term Failure Rate region of the Bathtub Curve.
